Two penalties helped Bundesliga champions FC Bayern München secure their first victory of the season, an emphatic 4-1 home success over Hertha BSC Berlin, and VfB Stuttgart also returned to winning ways by beating Hannover 96 2-0.

Klinsmann relief
Bayern had begun their season with two draws – against Hamburger SV and BV Borussia Dortmund – to get coach Jürgen Klinsmann's reign off to an inauspicious start. However, they struck form against their visitors from the German capital with the league's top goalscorer last year, Luca Toni, sending the Bavarian side on their way in the 12th minute.

Double spot-kick
Nine minutes after the break it was two as Philipp Lahm struck and the points were safe soon after when Bastian Schweinsteiger converted from the penalty spot. Fellow German international Miroslav Klose then also scored a spot-kick with 20 minutes remaining but there was still time for Marko Pantelić to pull back a late consolation.

First-half goals
Stuttgart moved to a point behind the early pacesetters – FC Schalke 04, Hamburg and Dortmund – after their second win of the campaign. Mario Gómez opened the scoring with his second league goal of the season, to add to the two he claimed against Győri ETO FC in the UEFA Cup on Thursday, in the 19th minute and Pável Pardo doubled the lead just before half-time with a penalty. VfB have six points from three games after losing at home to Bayer 04 Leverkusen last weekend.
