Promoted TSG 1899 Hoffenheim maintained their perfect start to the Bundesliga season with a 1-0 home victory over VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach, while FC Bayern München's inauspicious beginning continued with a 1-1 draw at BV Borussia Dortmund.
Hot streak
A scorer of two goals in last week's 3-0 success at FC Energie Cottbus, Bosnia-Herzegovina striker Vedad Ibisević was again on target for Hoffenheim, grabbing the winner against fellow newcomers Mönchengladbach after 31 minutes. Hoffenheim top the table after two matches though they will be joined on maximum points if VfL Wolfsburg overcome VfL Bochum 1848 on Sunday.
Bayern response
Held at home last week by Hamburger SV and having lost the German Super Cup to Dortmund last month, Jürgen Klinsmann's ten-man Bayern looked to be leaving the Westfalenstadion empty-handed for a second time following Jakub Błaszczykowski's eighth-minute goal. Things worsened for the Bavarian outfit when Mark van Bommel was dismissed midway through the first half but the champions responded and claimed a point thanks to substitute Tim Borowski's 75th-minute equaliser.
Hamburg winner
FC Schalke 04, who take on Club Atlético de Madrid in the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round on Wednesday, fell behind at Werder Bremen to Torsten Frings's 63rd-minute strike. Heiko Westermann (86) salvaged a point for Fred Rutten's side, who moved on to four points. Also celebrating a late goal were Hamburg, who defeated Karlsruher SC 2-1 at home. The hosts went ahead through a Tim Sebastian own goal (33) but were pegged back by Sebastian Freis (63), and Karlsruhe were set for a point until Joris Mathijsen struck in added time.
Gekas goal
Bayer 04 Leverkusen bounced back from last week's loss to Dortmund to overcome VfB Stuttgart 2-0 at the Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadion. Patrick Helmes opened the scoring ten minutes before the break, before Theofanis Gekas (90) secured three points for the visitors. Elsewhere, Hertha BSC Berlin and DSC Arminia Bielefeld drew 1-1. Marko Pantelić put Hertha in front after 32 minutes but Arminia replied five minutes later through Artur Wichniarek.
