Deco's sublime free-kick after just four minutes proved sufficient for Chelsea FC to earn their second Premier League win in as many games at Wigan Athletic FC.
Čech resistance
The Portuguese playmaker curled his effort past home goalkeeper Mike Pollitt after midfielder Lee Cattermole had handled 25 metres from goal. But Luiz Felipe Scolari's side could not build on their early advantage as the hosts produced a spirited response with Petr Čech the busier of the two keepers.
Perfect pair
The Czech custodian repelled a Wilson Palacios drive before thwarting Amr Zaki after he had been released by Jason Koumas in the first half. Chelsea steadied their ship after the break without carrying a goal threat but they were thankful to Čech again in the dying moments when he flew to his right to keep out a low drive from Olivier Kapo. The victory moved the London side top of the table on goal difference from Liverpool FC, with no other side taking maximum points from their opening two contests.
Red card
West Ham United FC could have been the third side on six points had they triumphed at Manchester City FC in the day's other match. The Hammers were reduced to ten men when Mark Noble became the first player sent off in the top tier this season for two bookings in the opening 38 minutes although the hosts suffered a blow when England international Micah Richards was carried off on a stretcher early in the second half with a head injury.
Elano double
Daniel Sturridge capitalised on a poor clearance from Matthew Upson to drill in a 65th-minute opener before Mark Hughes' side turned on the style to secure their first points of the season. Elano Blumer swept in a Stephen Ireland cut-back shortly after and the pair repeated the trick to carve out a third goal in a clinical ten-minute spell.
