Lazio on top
Lazio's season began on 31 August with a 4-1 win at Cagliari Calcio and the capital club, absent from European competition this season, defeated Sampdoria 2-0 with an early goal from summer signing Mauro Zárate and a 71st-minute Goran Pandev strike. Atalanta, meanwhile, won 1-0 at Bologna FC with a Tiberio Guarente goal on nine minutes. Udinese Calcio could have become the third team on six points but lost 1-0 to Juventus in the late game thanks to Amauri's low strike 23 minutes from time.

Viola reverse
The other of Italy's UEFA Champions League entrants in action, ACF Fiorentina, just like AS Roma after their 3-1 defeat at US Città di Palermo on Saturday, remain on one point after a 2-1 reverse at SSC Napoli. Adrian Mutu had put Fiorentina ahead late in the first half but Marek Hamšík levelled soon after the break and, with 21 minutes left, Christian Maggio gave the UEFA Cup hopefuls a lead they never relinquished to leave them level with Juve on four points.

Milan defeated
Also on that tally are FC Internazionale Milano, who defeated Calcio Catania 2-1 on Saturday, and Torino FC after a 1-1 draw at Reggina Calcio. Nicola Amoruso's 12th-minute opener for Torino was cancelled out when team-mate Marco Di Loreto put through his own goal just prior to the interval. However, Milan are yet to register a point; their opening loss to Bologna compounded by a 2-0 defeat at Genoa CFC as Giuseppe Sculli finished off a fine 30th-minute move and Diego Milito converted an injury-time penalty. Cagliari are also point-less following a 1-0 reverse at AC Siena but US Lecce got off the mark with a 2-0 win against AC Chievo Verona.
