FK Ekranas sealed their first Lithuanian title since 2005 after a 5-1 win over FK Žalgiris Vilnius gave them an unassailable A Lyga lead over nearest rivals FBK Kaunas.
Title triumph
Ekranas began their penultimate game of the season five points clear of Kaunas, after the deposed champions – who had a game in hand on the leaders – won 2-1 at third-placed FK Sūduva. It took only four minutes for Ekranas to break the deadlock against Žalgiris when Estonian international Taavi Rähn put the home side ahead with a header from a corner.
Won in style
Valdas Trakys doubled the advantage four minutes later and Rähn, the first Estonian to win the Lithuanian title, made it 3-0 with a carbon copy of his first strike early in the second half. Nerijus Sasnauskas and Paulius Janušauskas both scored in the last ten minutes for the Panevezys side while Igor Steško claimed a consolation for the visitors with a minute remaining. It is Ekranas' fourth Lithuanian title and they are the only side to deny Kaunas the championship since the turn of the century.
