Reims and France mourn Jonquet

Former Stade de Reims Champagne and France captain Robert Jonquet has died at the age of 83, with the former central defender, who was twice a European Champion Clubs' Cup finalist, succumbing to a long illness on Thursday.

World Cup legend
Capped 58 times by France between 1948 and 1960, Jonquet was a FIFA World Cup semi-finalist in 1958, along with the likes of Just Fontaine, Raymond Kopa and Armand Penverne. He created something of a World Cup legend when his side lost 5-2 against eventual winners Brazil in that semi-final in Sweden, playing part of the game with a broken fibula as there were no substitutions at that time.

European achievements
Jonquet won five French titles and two French Cups with Reims, and twice progressed to the final of the European Cup, losing out to Real Madrid CF in both 1955/56 and 1958/59. He played for Reims from 1942 to 1960, before spending the final years of his playing career at RC Strasbourg, and then coaching the Alsace club. A stand at Reims' new Auguste Delaune Stadium was named in his honour.
