Roy Keane's reign as manager of Sunderland AFC has ended after the Irishman stood down on Thursday with the north-east side in the Premier League relegation zone.

Unhappy anniversary
Having ended his playing career at Celtic FC following 12 years of sterling service in the Manchester United FC midfield, Keane took charge at the Stadium of Light in August 2006. He guided Sunderland to the title and promotion to the Premier League in his first campaign, and consolidated their place last season. The Black Cats have struggled this term, however, and lost 4-1 at home to Bolton Wanderers FC last weekend in what was Keane's 100th and final game at the helm.

'Winning mentality'
An official statement said: "Roy deserves huge respect for his contribution and the manner in which he guided the club from the depths of the Championship back to the Premier League. His winning mentality and singled mindedness were just what this club needed. Roy's decision to stand aside and allow someone else to take charge of the next chapter sums up his desire to always do what is best for the club. Even in his departure he has been more concerned for the welfare of the players and his staff than himself."
