Alain Perrin's bid to become the first coach to win three straight French Cups with three different sides was ended as his AS Saint-Etienne outfit went down 2-0 at Stade Rennais FC in the Round of 32.

Briand double
In the only all-Ligue 1 tie played on Saturday, the hosts took the lead a minute before half-time when Stéphane Mbia released Jimmy Briand who beat visiting goalkeeper Jérémie Janot. Rennes secured their progress late on as Briand scored his second, heading in Jérôme Leroy's cross.

Caen casualty
SM Caen were the day's only other top-flight casualty as they bowed out 3-1 at Ligue 2 high-flyers US Boulogne Côte-d'Opale with the hosts' goals coming from Alexandre Cuvillier, Steven Mouyoukolo and Grégory Thil. Earlier in the day, Olympique Lyonnais travelled to fifth-tier US Concarnoise to play their postponed match from the previous round. The holders came away with a 6-0 win while the lowest ever side to take part in the Round of 32 – ES Schirrhein – also suffered a heavy home defeat when they went down 8-0 to Toulouse FC.
