Liverpool FC returned to the Premier League summit after two goals in the last five minutes gave them a 3-2 victory at Portsmouth FC while Aston Villa FC leapfrogged Chelsea FC into third place.

Dramatic finish
Liverpool fell behind twice in the second half at Fratton Park, to goals from David Nugent and Hermann Hreidarsson, but replied with strikes from Fábio Aurélio and Dirk Kuyt. Substitute Fernando Torres then gave the visitors all three points in added time with a near-post header. The Reds are a point clear of Manchester United FC but have played two games more.

Chelsea frustrated
Goals from James Milner (27) and Gabriel Agbonlahor (90) were enough to give Villa a 2-0 win at Blackburn Rovers FC. They hop above Chelsea, who had to settle for a home point after a goalless draw against a determined Hull City AFC side with Michael Ballack going closest for the Blues when he hit the post from a free-kick.

Jô double
Everton FC secured their first victory in four Premier League games after a comfortable 3-0 win against visitors Bolton Wanderers FC. Mikel Arteta's 40th-minute penalty broke the deadlock and new signing Jô then claimed two second-half strikes – the latter another successful spot-kick – as the Merseyside club cruised to victory. Newcastle United FC eased their relegation worries with a 3-2 win at bottom side West Bromwich Albion FC.

Bellamy hot streak
Craig Bellamy scored the only goal as Manchester City FC defeated Middlesbrough FC 1-0 in the early game. Sunderland AFC also picked up a home win, against Stoke City FC, thanks to two goals in the final 12 minutes as Wigan Athletic FC and Fulham FC played out a goalless draw.
