Cup final
Sir Alex Ferguson's world champions, who play in the English League Cup final next month while continuing the defence of their Premier League and UEFA Champions League titles, cruised to victory with two goals in each half. Nani and Darron Gibson struck before the interval with Cristiano Ronaldo and Daniel Welbeck on target after the break.
Ronaldo influence
Nani cut in from the left and drilled a right-foot shot into the far corner on 29 minutes and the second arrived on the stroke of half-time when Ronaldo's blocked free-kick fell to midfielder Gibson, who fired in from 20 metres. The match ended as a contest shortly after half-time when the Portuguese winger headed in a corner and, although Miles Addison pulled one back, Welbeck added late gloss for United.
Early goals
Everton took a fourth-minute lead at Goodison Park when Tim Cahill's header from a Mikel Arteta corner was repelled on the goalline and Jack Rodwell followed up to score, but Villa quickly levelled through James Milner's penalty, awarded after Tony Hibbert had brought down Gabriel Agbonlahor.
Second penalty
The hosts hit the front again on 23 minutes when Steve Sidwell fouled Victor Anichebe in the penalty area and Arteta confidently converted the spot-kick. Martin O'Neill's side had chances to draw level, with Agbonlahor heading one particularly presentable effort wide from close range, and the visitors were made to pay with 15 minutes remaining when Anichebe's cross somehow evaded two Villa defenders and Cahill scuffed in.
Quarter-final draw
The draw for the last eight was made on Sunday afternoon and unfolded as follows:
Blackburn Rovers FC or Coventry City FC v Chelsea FC
Swansea City FC or Fulham FC v Manchester United FC
Cardiff City FC or Arsenal FC or Burnley FC v Sheffield United FC or Hull City AFC
Everton FC v West Ham United FC or Middlesbrough FC
