Eto'o takes pole position in sharp-shooting contest

Two goals at the weekend have put Samuel Eto'o top of the ESM Golden Shoe rankings, with Patrick Helmes's pair for Bayer 04 Leverkusen putting him in the running in the race to become Europe's top league goalscorer.

Two goals at the weekend have put Samuel Eto'o top of the ESM Golden Shoe rankings, but with the Austrian season resuming on Sunday, FC Salzburg's Marc Janko will be eager to give the FC Barcelona striker a run for his money as the competition heats up.

Winter break

Eto'o registered his 22nd and 23rd goals of the season as Spanish Liga leaders Barcelona came back from 2-0 down to earn a 2-2 draw against Real Betis Balompié on Saturday, and is now one point clear of Janko at the top of the table. Janko has not played a league game since Austria's winter break started on 6 December, and will look to continue his phenomenal goalscoring run when the Bundesliga leaders host second-placed SK Rapid Wien on Sunday. The 25-year-old ended 2008 with an awesome run of 20 goals in nine league games.

Weekend scorers
David Villa is up to equal third following his goal against Málaga CF on Saturday. Further down the rankings, Marco Di Vaio is level with Lionel Messi in fifth after registering in Bologna FC's draw with SSC Napoli and six strikers now share sixth place in the table. André-Pierre Gignac and Diego Forlán both scored once at the weekend, while Patrick Helmes's two goals for Bayer 04 Leverkusen at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim propelled him into the upper reaches of the table.

The leading five countries (Spain, Italy, Germany, France and England) on the UEFA Ranking have two as their multiplier. This is to emphasise the difference in (international) performance level between the clubs from those countries and those from the other nations.

A player cannot first play in a summer league (eg Norway) and then in a winter league (eg Spain) and combine the points total for each season.
