England won their first tournament of recent years after defeating holders Canada 3-1 in Larnaca to lift the second Cyprus Women's Cup. Of the three other UEFA WOMEN'S EURO 2009™ finalists involved in the competition, France pipped New Zealand to bronze on penalties, the Netherlands overwhelmed South Africa 5-0 and Russia lost 2-1 to the team they beat in the qualifying play-offs, Scotland. uefa.com rounds up the final day action.
Canada 1-3 England (final)
England came from behind to win the tournament and make it four wins and two draws in six fixtures in Cyprus over the last month, scoring a total of 20 goals. Although England dominated early on Christine Sinclair put Carolina Morace's side in front, lobbing Rachel Brown for her 99th international goal. However, England soon recovered their poise and Lianne Sanderson finished off an excellent ten-pass move in the 32nd minute. With five minutes left in the half, Kelly Smith struck from long range to edge England in front and Fara Williams produced a superb free-kick just before the interval to ensure victory.
New Zealand 1-1 France (5-6 pens, third-place play-off)
France, pipped to the final by England on goal difference, ended the tournament unbeaten but were given a tough work-out by New Zealand, who put on an impressive overall performance in Cyprus, also holding Canada and beating the Netherlands. Kristy Yallop gave the Football Ferns the lead just past the half-hour but Candie Herbert equalised two minutes from time and in the shoot-out France goalkeeper Sarah Bouhaddi blocked New Zealand's sixth attempt before converting the winner herself.
Netherlands 5-0 South Africa (fifth-place play-off)
Having started the tournament with a win against Russia but then lost to Canada and New Zealand, the Netherlands ended their campaign with a comfortable defeat of South Africa. Manon Melis opened the scoring in the second minute after an assist from Sylvia Smit, who was then in turn set up by her fellow forward for the second on the half-hour. Melis made it three two minutes later and late on Shanice van de Sanden and Chantal de Ridder added to the scoreline.
Scotland 2-1 Russia (seventh-place play-off)
Scotland, beaten on away goals by Russia to a place in the EURO finals in Finland, gained some measure of revenge to end a run of three defeats in Cyprus and give themselves heart for the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup qualifying draw on Tuesday. Russia were two down with half an hour gone though goals from Suzanne Grant and Pauline Hamill, and although Ekaterina Sochneva pulled one back late in the first period they were unable to equalise.
