Hamburger SV restated their Bundesliga ambitions with a 2-0 win over FC Energie Cottbus that moved them within four points of the summit, while Werder Bremen emerged convincing 4-0 winners against VfB Stuttgart.

Chasing trio
Consecutive losses in their last two outings had threatened to end Hamburg's title bid for another year, but Martin Jol's men lifted themselves back up to fourth courtesy of first-half efforts from Ivica Olić and Piotr Trochowski, the Croatian striker heading in on 32 minutes and his team-mate following suit with a free-kick seven minutes later. The result took HSV level on points with FC Bayern München and VfL Wolfsburg as all three attempt to overhaul Hertha BSC Berlin, while Cottbus remain one spot off the bottom in 17th.

Rosenberg double
Still hopeful of landing the UEFA Cup this season, tenth-placed Bremen had been without a win in the league since 2008, yet that all changed as they made short work of Stuttgart, in sixth. Brazilian playmaker Diego opened the scoring in the 34th minute and after Claudio Pizarro made it 2-0 with 53 minutes gone, Markus Rosenberg notched a double with goals on 59 and 74 minutes.
