Fred Rutten will become the new coach of PSV Eindhoven on 1 July, having signed a three-year contract to return to the club where he assisted Guus Hiddink to great success between 2002 and 2006.
Return
Rutten, 46, only stepped down as FC Schalke 04 coach at the end of March, having joined in the summer from FC Twente following two successful years at PSV's Eredivisie rivals. Rutten first arrived at PSV in 2001 as their youth coach, before being appointed Hiddink's assistant the next season. He takes over a PSV role that became vacant in January when Huub Stevens stepped down, since when Dwight Lodeweges has been in caretaker charge.
'Special feeling'
"I am really looking forward to it," Rutten said. "This gives me a very special feeling, because I've already worked here for five years. It is an especially great feeling to return because of the excellent results we achieved here before. PSV are a warm club." PSV will miss out on the Dutch title for the first time since 2003/04. They are fifth in the Eredivisie with four games left – three points behind SC Heerenveen in fourth, the lowest position that would ensure a UEFA Europa League place without recourse to the end-of-season play-offs.
