After a thrilling few days of UEFA club competition action, domestic football returns to the fore this weekend with derbies in Rome, Istanbul and Moscow among the highlights.
Italy: S.S. Lazio v AS Roma (Sat, 15.00)
Ninth-placed Lazio will be aiming to derail Roma's pursuit of Italy's final UEFA Champions League berth in the Derby della Capitale. Delio Rossi's Lazio are hardly in great form, though, following three successive victories in the league with as many defeats without scoring a goal. Roma are sixth, five points shy of Genoa CFC in fourth, and could take to the field without injury doubt Mirko Vučinić. "I know what the derby means in Rome and I don't want to see it from the stands, especially as it's such an important clash," said the Montenegrin.
Turkey: Galatasaray AŞ v Fenerbahçe SK (Sun, 19.00)
Both sides know a defeat at the Ali Sami Yen Stadium could strike a terminal blow to their title aspirations. The pair trail leaders Sivasspor by six points and are gearing up for the first derby since 1994/95 in which neither team has been in the top two. Home coach Bülent Korkmaz and opposite number Luis Aragonés will be without key personnel for a game which has had an unusual build-up with personnel from both clubs refusing to speak to the media.
Russia: PFC CSKA Moskva v FC Lokomotiv Moskva (Sun, 14.00)
CSKA's attempts to end a 273-minute goal drought in all competitions has not been helped by the loss of Brazilian duo Vágner Love, who will be out for ten days with an ankle injury and Daniel Carvalho, who could miss three weeks with a problem to his left thigh. One win from their first three Premier-Liga matches means Zico's team lie eighth, two places below Lokomotiv. The Railway Men defeated PFC Krylya Sovetov Samara 2-1 last time out for their first league victory of the season after opening with two draws.
Germany: VfB Stuttgart v Hamburger SV (Sun, 17.00)
Fresh from a fine 3-1 victory against Manchester City FC in the first leg of their UEFA Cup quarter-final, HSV – who are also in the German Cup semi-finals – travel to Stuttgart joint-top of the Bundesliga with VfL Wolfsburg. "Stuttgart will surely have an advantage when it comes to energy levels as they are only playing in one competition," said Jol. "On the other hand, we are being carried along by the joy of still being in all competitions."
England: Sunderland AFC v Manchester United FC (Sat, 15.00)
United travel to the Stadium of Light determined to eradicate the uncertainties which have blighted their recent defensive displays. The champions have conceded ten goals in their last four matches – including two in a home UEFA Champions League draw with FC Porto on Tuesday – yet still top the Premier League by a point from Liverpool FC with a game in hand. Liverpool will look to put the disappointment of their UEFA Champions League loss to Chelsea FC behind them by beating Blackburn Rovers FC, while Guus Hiddink's side, four points off the top in third, host Bolton Wanderers FC.
France: LOSC Lille Métropole v Paris Saint-Germain FC (Sun, 18.45)
Lille midfielder Ludovic Obraniak has cited "the smell of Europe" as the reason for the club's four-game winning run, propelling them to within four points of leaders Olympique Lyonnais. PSG are level with the northerners but have not triumphed at Lille – winners of their last seven home games – since 30 April 1997. The fixture is sandwiched between two games against FC Dynamo Kyiv for the capital club, the first leg of their UEFA Cup tie having finished 0-0 at the Parc des Princes on Thursday.
Spain: RC Deportivo La Coruña v Club Atlético de Madrid (Sun, 21.00)
Level on 43 points in eighth and sixth respectively, a win is imperative if either side is to maintain their pursuit of the Liga's final UEFA Champions League place. Both suffered defeats last weekend, and Atlético striker Sergio Agüero is determined to make amends for the 4-2 home loss to CA Osasuna. "The club and the fans know we are not playing well," he said. "It's our fault, and now we must concentrate and beat Depor as we have to play in the Champions League next season."
