Relegation-threatened DSC Arminia Bielefeld have reacted to a string of poor results by dismissing coach Michael Frontzeck with just a single match remaining in the Bundesliga season.

Relegation woe
Saturday's 6-0 defeat by BV Borussia Dortmund means Arminia have not won for nine league games and sit three points from safety at 16th in the table – a position that would put them in a relegation play-off with the third-placed side from the 2. Bundesliga. However, the North-Rhine Wesphalia club are only a point off bottom and so could still be demoted directly to the second tier on the last day of the campaign, when they host mid-table Hannover 96.

'Fingers crossed'
General manager Detlev Dammeier said: "We have taken this action so we can focus on the team and achieve our minimum goal of beating Hannover and staying in the relegation play-offs. We can use the time to discuss a successor for Michael Frontzeck." Frontzeck himself added: "Of course I am sad. It is sad that we cannot continue the whole way together. Given the performances the team has shown, we have not won enough points, and it all comes down to that in the end. The team can still do it, and of course I will keep my fingers crossed for them on Saturday."
