AC Milan booked themselves a place in next season's UEFA Champions League group stage, having missed out this year, with a 2-0 victory at rivals ACF Fiorentina while Torino FC suffered relegation in the last round of Serie A matches .
Maldini retirement
A two-goal triumph for Fiorentina would have earned them third place in the standings at Milan's expense, but ten minutes into the second half Kaká turned in a Gianluca Zambrotta cross to strengthen the Rossoneri's hold on a podium finish. Filippo Inzaghi then fired too high before substitute Pato finished deftly with 15 minutes remaining, ensuring a victorious outcome to Paolo Maldini's final outing in a Milan shirt. It also proved to be coach Carlo Ancelotti's last match for the club, the 49-year-old leaving by mutual consent after the final whistle. For their part, the Viola must settle for a UEFA Champions League qualifying berth.
Ibrahimović title
Level on points with Milan, Juventus finished as runners-up thanks to a 2-0 win against S.S. Lazio and their superior head-to-head record, Vincenzo Iaquinta striking in either half as Pavel Nedvěd ended his Juve career on a high. Another high-profile player bidding farewell to supporters was Luís Figo, and the FC Internazionale Milano midfielder entered retirement following the champions' 4-3 success against Atalanta BC. Esteban Cambiasso and Zlatan Ibrahimović both scored late on to rescue the points for Inter, with Ibrahimović plundering a double to finish the season as Capocannoniere with 25 goals.
Torino despair
At the bottom, Torino were unable to save themselves from the drop, though Bologna FC's 3-1 victory over Calcio Catania rendered their trip to AS Roma meaningless. As it happened, the capital outfit – who will enter UEFA Europa League qualifying next term – emerged 3-2 winners. Joining Roma in that competition will be fifth-placed Genoa CFC, and they ended their campaign by defeating relegated US Lecce 4-1. Elsewhere, Udinese Calcio bowed out by downing Cagliari Calcio 6-2, SSC Napoli beat AC Chievo Verona 3-0, US Città di Palermo drew 2-2 with UC Sampdoria and demoted Reggina Calcio drew 1-1 with AC Siena.
