Unirea claim first Romanian title

AFC Unirea Urziceni won the Romanian title for the first time in their history on Wednesday, a 1-1 draw against FC Steaua Bucureşti on the final day of the season earning Dan Petrescu's side a UEFA Champions League group stage place.

Mathematical certainty
Following CFR 1907 Cluj's success last season, the title has been won by a side from outside Bucharest for the second year in a row with Urziceni – population: 17,000 – the second smallest city to have a top-flight team in Romania. Already four points clear of second-placed FC Dinamo 1948 Bucureşti going into tonight's game, the point – and FC Timişoara's 1-0 defeat at FC Brasov – ensured that Unirea could not be denied top spot.

Appeal looming
Dinamo lost their final game 5-2 at FC 2005 SA Arges to finish four points clear of third-placed Timişoara, although their positions – and the accompanying UEFA Champions League third qualifying round place – are not yet secure. The Court of Arbitration for Sport will shortly hear an appeal against a six-point deduction handed to Timişoara earlier the season due to a dispute over their identity. Should the deduction be reduced or repealed, things could change.
