Uncapped Santos FC midfielder Thórunn Helga Jónsdóttir is among the players taken by Iceland coach Siggi Eyjólfsson to this week's friendlies against England and Denmark as he puts his side through their paces before naming his squad for UEFA WOMEN'S EURO 2009™.
Jónsdóttir call
Twenty members of Eyjólfsson's provisional squad of 40 have travelled to play England in Colchester on Thursday and Denmark in Staines, to the west of London, three days later. Jónsdóttir, 24, has been capped seven times at Under-21 level and has impressed since joining Santos in the autumn, helping the club to victory in the Brazilian Cup. "I have seen some of her games on DVD so I thought it was worthwhile making space for her in the squad so I can see her skills," Eyjólfsson said.
Prolific striker
"I will announce the final 22 player squad at the last possible moment but none of the 40 players in the provisional squad is out – some of the players left at home for these two friendly games could very well be in the final squad." Also included is prolific striker Margrét Lára Vidarsdóttir, who last week left Linköpings FC to link up with three of her squad-mates at another Swedish club, Kristianstads DFF, where she scored on her league debut.
