Former Hungary coach Dr György Mezey has accepted a one-year deal to take over at the helm of FC Fehérvár after a move for Lothar Matthäus fell through.
Experience
Sixth in the 1. Liga last term, Fehérvár looked to have secured Matthäus's services but a deal was never finalised so Mezey has stepped in for the coming campaign. It marks a return to coaching after a five-season absence for the 67-year-old, a member of the UEFA Technical Committee who guided Hungary to the 1986 FIFA World Cup finals. A title winner with MTK Budapest and Budapest Honvéd FC, since Mezey stepped down at Újpest FC in summer 2004 he has worked as a technical director at the Hungarian Football Federation, sporting director at FC Székesfehérvár and on an ongoing project with the Ferenc Puskás Football Academy in Felcsut. His role with UEFA, meanwhile, last month saw him on duty at the UEFA European Under-21 Championship.
