Wayne Rooney struck a last-gasp leveller for Manchester United FC, but the FA Community Shield went to Chelsea FC as new manager Carlo Ancelotti began his reign with silverware courtesy of a penalty shoot-out win at Wembley Stadium.

Čech heroics
United emerged triumphant on spot-kicks when the two sides met in the 2007/08 UEFA Champions League final, however this time it was the Londoners who came out on top, goalkeeper Petr Čech having saved from Ryan Giggs and Patrice Evra after the match finished 2-2 at the end of 90 minutes. Goals from Ricardo Carvalho and Frank Lampard had earlier put the Blues 2-1 ahead following Nani's early opener, and although Rooney later restored parity, Ancelotti was soon celebrating his first trophy at the club since taking over in the summer.

Sir Bobby tribute
The afternoon began with a tribute to Sir Bobby Robson, who died last month, and the legendary manager would surely have enjoyed the match that followed, with Evra heading a goalbound Ivanović effort on to the woodwork shortly after kick-off. Chastened by that reprieve, the Red Devils responded almost immediately, Portuguese winger Nani firing into the far corner from outside the area with ten minutes gone.

Chelsea comeback
That signalled a period of domination by the Premier League champions, but FA Cup holders Chelsea gradually worked their way back into the game and equalised when Carvalho headed in a loose ball seven minutes after the interval. A rapid counterattack then ended with Lampard burying the ball on 70 minutes and despite a cool finish at the other end from his England team-mate in the dying seconds, Čech was on hand to help Ancelotti's men seal a 4-1 triumph from the penalty spot. United's disappointment was compounded by injury to Nani, who dislocated his shoulder during the game and will miss his side's Premier League opener at home to Birmingham City FC on Sunday. United are already without Edwin van der Sar (hand) and Nemanja Vidić (calf).
