FC Internazionale Milano's title defence got off to an indifferent start in Italy, with Vitali Kutuzov earning AS Bari a 1-1 draw at San Siro after Samuel Eto'o opened his account for his new club from the penalty spot.

Kutuzov strike
Promoted last season, Bari came to frustrate Inter, defending doggedly until Diego Milito went down under a Leonardo Bonucci challenge, allowing Eto'o – who joined José Mourinho's side from FC Barcelona as part of the deal that saw Zlatan Ibrahimović head to Camp Nou – to convert from the spot in the 56th minute. The Cameroonian missed a decent chance shortly afterwards, and Inter were made to pay as Antonio Langella's ball found Kutuzov free of his marker, with the Belarussian striker going on to beat Júlio César.

Later games
Last season's runners up Juventus had a more positive start, with Vincenzo Iaquinta's header from an eleventh-minute free-kick giving them a 1-0 win against AC Chievo Verona. Goals from Taddei and Francesco Totti, meanwhile, could not buy AS Roma an opening-night victory as they went down to Giuseppe Biava's late goal at Genoa CFC. Their capital rivals S.S. Lazio have three points on the board after a 1-0 win against Atalanta BC, Parma FC won 2-1 at Udinese Calcio, a last-gasp goal denied SSC Napoli a victory by the same margin at US Città di Palermo, while another late effort earned UC Sampdoria a 2-1 win at Calcio Catania. There were no goals between AS Livorno Calcio and Cagliari Calcio.
