Hertha BSC Berlin's dreadful start in the Bundesliga continued as they were stunned 4-0 at home by SC Freiburg while the top two, Hamburger SV and Bayer 04 Leverkusen, were forced to settle for draws.

Banović brace
Hertha finished fourth last season but those heady heights must seem an age ago as they slumped to a fifth defeat in six games this term, leaving them bottom of the table. Freiburg started the day just one place above them but showed no signs of insecurity as they registered twice in the first 12 minutes, Ivica Banović striking the first goal five minutes in and Cedric Makiadi doubling the advantage. Any hopes the home side harboured of a comeback disintegrated just before the break when Mohamadou Idrissou made it 3-0 and the 2. Bundesliga champions completed a memorable afternoon midway through the second half when Banović claimed his second.

Points dropped
Hamburg were hoping to shake their 3-0 reverse at SK Rapid Wien in the UEFA Europa League out of their system away to unbeaten Eintracht Frankfurt, and they were dominant in the opening half an hour. Zé Roberto's header gave them an eighth-minute lead, after Mladen Petrić had headed Piotr Trochowski's free-kick into the Brazilian midfielder's path, but the home side earned a point when Marco Russ volleyed in from Alexander Meier's nod-down. "We have to be clear that we dropped two points here today," said Hamburg coach Bruno Labbadia. "But the team bounced back very well [after the Rapid defeat]." Leverkusen moved alongside Hamburg on 14 points but missed the chance to take top spot after a goalless draw at home to Werder Bremen.
