FC Barcelona and Real Madrid CF flexed their muscles in Spain with five-star showings but the game of the weekend was the seven-goal Manchester derby in England. uefa.com rounds up the action.
Perfect starts
Although three of the four sides that entered the weekend fixtures in the Spanish Liga with 100 per cent records continued their streaks, the traditional powerhouses were the most impressive, with Barcelona beating Club Atlético de Madrid 5-2 and Los Merengues inflicting a 5-0 scoreline on promoted Xerez CD. The summer signings all played their parts too, Zlatan Ibrahimović setting the Catalan club on their way while Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice for the capital outfit and Karim Benzema also registered. Fellow perfectionists Athletic Club Bilbao cannot be ignored, however, after Fernando Llorente struck twice in a 3-2 win at home to Villarreal CF.
Owen winner
Michael Owen picked the perfect moment to score his first goal in front of the Old Trafford fans, striking in the sixth minute of added time to give Manchester United FC a 4-3 win against the previously flawless Manchester City FC. Mark Hughes's side had levelled three times earlier in the contest, and twice through Craig Bellamy following Darren Fletcher headers. Chelsea FC remain the side to catch, though, as a 3-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur FC kept them three points ahead of the pack.
Sampdoria top
The Milan clubs both celebrated single-goal successes on Sunday but are still playing catch-up to the perfect records of Juventus, 2-0 Saturday winners against AS Livorno Calcio, and surprise leaders UD Sampdoria, who cruised past AC Siena 4-1 to top the table on goals scored. FC Bayern München have overcome their stuttering start to move ominously into third spot in the Bundesliga thanks to Saturday's 2-1 victory versus 1. FC Nürnberg, with the top two, Hamburger SV and Bayer 04 Leverkusen, only three points ahead after Sunday draws. Paris Saint-Germain FC and Olympique Lyonnais played out a 1-1 draw in Ligue 1's weekend eye-catcher, allowing FC Girondins de Bordeaux to prise a two-point cushion at the head of the French standings courtesy of a 2-0 win at US Boulogne.
Potent PSV
Elsewhere, PSV Eindhoven won the eagerly awaited contest between the pre-weekend Eredivisie top two, prevailing 3-1 at Feyenoord, although Luis Suárez did his best to upstage both sides with all four goals in AFC Ajax's 4-0 cruise at VVV Venlo. SC Braga's fairytale start in Portugal continued as they overcame FC Porto 1-0 to earn themselves a fifth straight victory and Panathinaikos FC pulled four points clear in Greece following a fourth consecutive win. Fenerbahçe SK and Galatasaray AŞ are both still to slip up in Turkey, while Celtic FC scored a last-gasp winner to reach the Scottish Premier League summit.
