Early strikes
The hosts' hopes of keeping things tight at the back early on to build some confidence were quickly dashed when the Gelsenkirchen side took a second-minute lead, Gerald Asamoah heading a corner into a dangerous area for Jefferson Farfán to score from close range. Köln's response was impressive, though, with Fabrice Ehret releasing Lukas Podolski to slide in the equaliser. However, the home side started the second half in a manner as inauspicious as the first as Farfán found Levan Kobiashvili galloping into the left channel, and the Georgian international drilled his finish past Faryd Mondragón. Schalke have ten points from five games as a result, three behind Hamburger SV and Bayer 04 Leverkusen, with Köln only earning a single draw to date.
Fabulous Fromlowitz
The day's other game ended goalless between Bremen and Hannover, largely thanks to the visitors' goalkeeper Florian Fromlowitz, who made a number of outstanding saves in the first half. Following the interval, Per Mertesacker did beat the goalkeeper only for Steve Cherundolo to repel his effort on the line, before the Hannover No1 made a double save from Claudio Pizarro. Consequently, Bremen sit sixth and Hannover eleventh with eight and five points respectively.
