Hopes dashed
Following UC Sampdoria's failure to overcome Parma FC earlier in the day, Ciro Ferrara's side knew three points in Sicily would lift them above the Blucerchiati and FC Internazionale Milano to the top of the table. Palermo, however, led by former Inter goalkeeper Walter Zenga, had other ideas and inflicted the Turin club's first league defeat since 11 April, a setback which leaves La Vecchia Signora in third, two points off the pace.
Parma point
Inter's 2-1 defeat of Udinese Calcio on Saturday had deposed Sampdoria of top spot yet their attempts to regain pole position started promisingly thanks to Giampaolo Pazzini's fourth league goal of the season (23). However, their lead was short-lived as Daniele Galloppa restored parity for Parma seven minutes later, leaving Sampdoria in second, level on points with Inter.
Rossoneri woe
AC Milan's winless run in all competitions now stands at four matches after a 1-1 draw at ten-man Atalanta BC, who are still searching for their first win of the campaign. Simone Tiribocchi (21) fired the hosts, who lost Ivan Radovanović to a 39th-minute red card, ahead and only the intervention of substitute Ronaldinho (83) prevented the Rossoneri from slumping to their second defeat inside a week following the loss to FC Zürich in the UEFA Champions League. Meanwhile, fourth-placed ACF Fiorentina were held 0-0 at home by S.S. Lazio, while Genoa CFC, in fifth, ruined Bologna FC's centenary celebrations with a 3-1 victory at the Stadio Renato Dall'Ara despite Giandomenico Mesto 's dismissal shortly after the break.
Chievo run
Elsewhere, Francesco Totti scored twice as AS Roma came from behind to beat SSC Napoli 2-1, and AC Chievo Verona stretched their unbeaten run to five matches with a 2-1 victory at Cagliari Calcio. Tuscan rivals AC Siena and AS Livorno Calcio drew 0-0.
