• Scoring six goals in 18 international games for Romania, striker Mircea Sandu spent much of his playing career with FC Sportul Studenţesc Bucureşti, finally retiring in 1987 after a spell at FC Gloria Buzău. In total, he scored 167 times in 408 league games.
• He quickly became involved with the Romanian Football Federation (FRF), serving as deputy general secretary and general secretary before being made president in 1990, helping to reorganise football in post-communist Romania.
• Sandu has overseen the building of a new training centre at Mogosoaia and the construction of the new FRF headquarters, but has said: "Football does not belong to us, it belongs to the people. Football gave me everything and it's our duty to give it our dedicated efforts. We work for football and the people; we have to be true to this wonderful sport." After more than two decades of outstanding work as FRF president, he was named honorary FRF president in March 2014.
