• An amateur player for VfB Regensburg (1957-1964), FC Moutier (1968-1969) and FC Muri-Gümligen (1970-1979), Gerhard Aigner also tried his hand as a youth coach and a referee in parallel with his career at UEFA, which he first joined as an administrator in 1969.
• His appointment as UEFA general secretary in 1989 saw him become the senior figure in the UEFA administration, a position he continued to occupy as UEFA chief executive from 2000 until he left UEFA in 2003.
• Now with more time to spend on his hobbies – tennis, sailing, walking tours, cross-country skiing, classical music, theatre and art – he is proud of his work at UEFA, saying: "The way that we were able to organise ourselves and get ourselves ready for challenges, to switch from being a reactive body to a proactive body – it was a real thrill to do that and I have great satisfaction that we managed it."
