• A successful politician and football administrator, Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder was president of VfB Stuttgart from 1975 to 2000, with the club winning two Bundesliga titles and the German Cup during his tenure.
• A member of the Baden-Wurttemberg state parliament from 1980 to 2001, he served as the region's sports minister (1980-1991) and minister of finance (1991-1998). In 2001, he became president of the German Football Association (DFB) and oversaw the hosting of the 2006 FIFA World Cup before stepping down in September 2006.
• He has said: "Like all children, I started to kick everything that moved in front of me from a young age. When I was eight, I started to play club football, had a marvellous time and won some titles. Later, I decided to give back to football all the joy, pleasure and positive experiences I got out of it, and I hope that others might benefit from my experience."
