• Having emerged as one of the best full-backs and centre-halves of his generation with SO Pont-de-Chéruy Chavanoz, Jean Fournet-Fayard was a member of the first France side to win an international trophy – at the 1949 FIFA junior tournament in the Netherlands – but lasted just two years as a professional at Angers SCO before a serious knee injury ended his career.
• Fournet-Fayard then concentrated on his work as a pharmacist, eventually becoming director of a company with 2,000 employees, but he remained close to the game as a coach and official at Pont-de-Chéruy, and was elected as president of the Ligue Rhône-Alpes in 1976, serving as France Football Federation (FFF) president from 1984 to 1993.
• Also a keen basketball fan, Fournet-Fayard eventually made way for Claude Simonet as FFF president, and never lost his belief in the importance of grassroots football, saying: "One thing you can never forget is that the grassroots give credibility to top-level football."
