Kevin Kuranyi was on target as FC Schalke 04 returned to second spot in the Bundesliga with a 1-0 win over struggling 1. FC Nürnberg, and there was joy too for BV Borussia Dortmund as they triumphed 3-2 at 1. FC Köln.
Schalke run
Felix Magath's charges lie a solitary point behind pacesetters Bayer 04 Leverkusen after compiling their fourth consecutive league victory without conceding, despite experiencing a few nervy moments along the way. Lying 17th in the 18-team division, Nürnberg struck the woodwork on two occasions, through Angelos Charisteas in the first half and Christian Eigler in the second, but ultimately they were unable to stave off a fifth loss in five outings. Kuranyi it was who made the difference in the end, the 27-year-old finishing from close range after latching on to a Jefferson Farfán cross three minutes after the restart.
Late drama
Three rungs below Schalke, Dortmund moved to within five points of Leverkusen courtesy of their fifth straight Bundesliga success. Mats Hummels hit two first-half efforts for the visitors, but it seemed his contribution would only earn a draw when efforts in the last ten minutes from Kevin McKenna (82) and Youssef Mohamad (88) brought Köln level again. A minute into added time, however, Kevin Grosskreutz found the net to clinch a dramatic win.
