Former Real Madrid CF player and coach Luis Molowny died on Friday at the age of 84.
Tenerife-born Molowny joined Madrid from Marino FC in 1946 and was to stay in the capital for 11 years. During his time with Madrid he helped them to victory in the inaugural 1955/56 European Champion Clubs' Cup final, and won two Spanish titles and one Copa del Rey. He was capped seven times by Spain, including finishing fourth at the 1950 FIFA World Cup.
After leaving Madrid, Molowny joined UD Las Palmas as a player and coach. Having been national coach for four games in 1969, Molowny returned to lead Madrid on four occasions between 1974 and 1986, winning three league titles and two UEFA Cups. He also served as sporting director from 1986 until 1990. Madrid's players will wear black armbands during Saturday's game against Xerez CD.
In a statement, Madrid said: "Molowny was a player, coach and sporting director of the club, but most of all he symbolised the values of Real Madrid which have influenced future generations of footballers."
