Catania throw title race wide open

FC Internazionale Milano's lead at the top of Serie A could be down to a point by Sunday night after José Mourinho's team were beaten 3-1 at Calcio Catania.

Calcio Catania condemned ten-man FC Internazionale Milano to their heaviest defeat of the campaign with a 3-1 home victory which blows the Serie A title race wide open.

The Nerazzurri lead the way by four points at the summit but could find their advantage down to one if AC Milan overcome AC Chievo Verona on Sunday. Inter's preparations for Tuesday's UEFA Champions League first knockout round second leg at Chelsea FC seemed to be going to plan when Diego Milito (54) turned in Samuel Eto'o's ball across the penalty area. The hosts – coached by former Inter assistant Siniša Mihajlović – deservedly equalised through Maxi López's neat finish (74), the striker getting the run on Lucio to sweep Pablo Álvarez's cross past Júlio César, before the game turned on the dismissal of Sulley Muntari.

The Ghana midfielder received two bookings within 85 seconds of replacing Esteban Cambiasso, his second for handling a free-kick in the area which allowed Giuseppe Mascara (81) to nonchalantly chip in the ensuing spot-kick. Inter's disappointment, and their first league loss since 5 December, was confirmed in added time when Jorge Martínez struck.
