City goalkeeper Shay Given was carried off with 17 minutes remaining with a suspected broken left shoulder.
At the other end of the table West Ham United FC are virtually assured of a place in the Premier League next season after defeating Wigan Athletic FC 3-2, while third-bottom Hull City AFC are almost certain to be relegated after losing 1-0 at home to Sunderland AFC. West Ham's place in the top flight will be confirmed should Burnley FC fail to defeat Liverpool FC on Sunday.
Elsewhere, Aruna Dindane scored twice as bottom-side Portsmouth FC came from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Bolton Wanderers FC and Wolverhampton Wanderers FC drew 1-1 with Blackburn Rovers FC.
