Ryan Giggs scored two second-half penalties to fire Manchester United FC to a 3-1 win against Tottenham Hotspur FC and back to the top of the Premier League.

After a first half of few chances the game burst to life on 58 minutes when Patrice Evra was brought down by Benoît Assou-Ekotto in the area allowing Giggs to fire in from the spot.

The introduction of Aaron Lennon as a substitute on his return from injury injected life into Tottenham who drew level when Ledley King headed in Gareth Bale's corner 12 minutes later.

United were without the injured Wayne Rooney, but Nani settled United nerves when he chipped in brilliantly with nine minutes remaining, before Giggs rounded off victory with his second penalty four minutes from time. The victory takes United two points clear of Chelsea FC who play Stoke City FC on Sunday.

Tottenham, who had beaten Arsenal FC and Chelsea in their previous two games, hung on to fourth spot by a point after Manchester City FC drew 0-0 with Arsenal, a result that ended the latter's title challenge. City goalkeeper Shay Given was carried off with 17 minutes remaining with a suspected broken left shoulder.

At the other end of the table West Ham United FC are virtually assured of a place in the Premier League next season after defeating Wigan Athletic FC 3-2, while third-bottom Hull City AFC are almost certain to be relegated after losing 1-0 at home to Sunderland AFC. West Ham's place in the top flight will be confirmed should Burnley FC fail to defeat Liverpool FC on Sunday.

Elsewhere, Aruna Dindane scored twice as bottom-side Portsmouth FC came from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Bolton Wanderers FC and Wolverhampton Wanderers FC drew 1-1 with Blackburn Rovers FC.
