Stéphane Mbia's 88th-minute strike earned Olympique de Marseille a 1-0 victory against FC Sochaux-Montbéliard on Wednesday which sends them five points clear at the top of Ligue 1.

OM defeated OGC Nice 4-1 on Sunday to reclaim the league leadership from AJ Auxerre but found things much tougher against Sochaux. Defender Mbia finally secured maximum points as full time approached, though, by following up after Sochaux goalkeeper Matthieu Dreyer had failed to block his effort from close range.

The champions FC Girondins de Bordeaux, meanwhile, are now nine points off the pace (with a game in hand) after suffering a third consecutive league defeat by losing 2-1 at Le Mans UC 72. Laurent Blanc's side took the lead through Henrique's header on eight minutes but were undone by goals from Anthony Le Tallec (17) and Mathieu Dossevi (45).

Le Mans, who had Fousseyni Cissé dismissed seven minutes from time, leapfrog Sochaux into 14th place.
