Wigan comeback floors Arsenal

Arsenal FC's Premier League title hopes look bleak after a dramatic 3-2 defeat at lowly Wigan Athletic FC.

Chelsea FC's loss at Tottenham Hotspur FC on Saturday had given Arsenal a chance to move to within three points of the lead despite their own loss to Spurs in midweek. All seemed good for Arsenal when they led 2-0 early in the second half but three goals in the last ten minutes turned the game on its head.

Four minutes before half-time Arsenal led when Nicklas Bendtner's pass was slotted in by Theo Walcott and Mikaël Silvestre doubled the lead early in the second period, heading in Samir Nasri's corner. Wigan were pushing hard, though, and gained hope when Charles N'Zogbia cut in from the right and found Victor Moses to cut back for Ben Watson to make it 2-1.

The equaliser arrived in the 89th minute. Nasri had just cleared a Watson shot off the line when a corner came in which Łukasz Fabiański could not hold and deflected in off Titus Bramble's head. Still Wigan moved forward and in added time N'Zogbia's superb finish clinched a win which takes his side seven points clear of the relegation zone and leaves third-placed Arsenal six adrift of Chelsea with three games left.

In Sunday's other game, Aston Villa FC moved above Liverpool FC and into sixth courtesy of a 2-1 win at relegated FA Cup finalists Portsmouth FC. Michael Brown curled in on nine minutes to give Portsmouth the lead with his first goal for the club but John Carew levelled the score just seven minutes later. The Norwegian striker missed a penalty before half-time but substitute Nathan Delfouneso turned in Emile Heskey's flick (82) to win the game with his first Premier League strike for Villa.
