Juan Carlos Garrido has signed a new one-year contract after guiding Villarreal CF to sixth place in the Liga and putting them in contention for UEFA Champions League qualification.
Garrido replaced Ernesto Valverde – who himself only succeeded Manuel Pellegrini last summer – at El Madrigal on 1 February and signed a deal that lasted until the end of this campaign. The 41-year-old Garrido was promoted from his role as reserve-team coach but has since impressed in charge of the first XI.
The Yellow Submarine have won five of their last six league fixtures and now occupy Spain's final UEFA Europa League berth with four games remaining. Getafe CF are just two points behind in seventh but Villarreal have their sights on loftier aims, with RCD Mallorca only four points ahead in the final UEFA Champions League place. Garrido's side were knocked out by VfL Wolfsburg in the round of 32 of this season's UEFA Europa League.
