Leonardo makes way at Milan

Leonardo has announced he will step down as coach of AC Milan following his side's final match of the season against Juventus on Saturday.

During a joint press conference with vice-president Adriano Galliani the former Milan and Brazil midfielder said: "We are here to announce with calm and serenity that we will go our separate ways. Our relationship is as good as it has always been for many years.

"We have just come to the end of the road. For me it was very important to ensure the team qualified for the UEFA Champions League and I'm happy I managed to do that. We waited to announce my departure until this objective had been achieved." Milan are third in Serie A and have qualified for next season's group stage as they cannot be caught regardless of the result against Juventus.

Leonardo, 40, replaced Carlo Ancelotti last summer and took Milan through to the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League where they were knocked out by Manchester United FC. A FIFA World Cup winner with Brazil in 1994, Leonardo won one Scudetto and one Coppa Italia with Milan. After retiring as a player he continued to work for the club and played an influential role in bringing compatriots Kaká, Pato and Thiago Silva to the San Siro.
