Spurs and City both win ahead of crunch meeting

Tottenham Hotspur FC remain a point clear of fifth-placed Manchester City FC in the race to claim England's fourth UEFA Champions League berth after the pair both recorded home victories on Saturday.

Tom Huddlestone's strike from outside the penalty area earned Tottenham a 1-0 win against Bolton Wanderers FC, while Manchester City recovered from a goal down to defeat Aston Villa FC 3-1, a victory which ended the Birmingham club's hopes of a top-four finish. John Carew (16) fired under debutant Márton Fülöp in the home goal before Roberto Mancini's team struck twice in the space of three minutes before half-time.

Carlos Tévez equalised with a 41st-minute penalty after Stephen Warnock fouled Adam Johnson and seconds after Carew had struck the crossbar, Emmanuel Adebayor put City ahead from close range. Craig Bellamy made the points safe a minute from time. All eyes will now be trained on the City of Manchester Stadium on Wednesday, when Tottenham visit their rivals in the penultimate game of the season knowing a win would confirm their place in the UEFA Champions League play-offs next season.

Elsewhere, Stoke City FC drew 0-0 at home with Everton, Birmingham City FC defeated already-relegated Burnley FC 2-1 and bottom club Portsmouth FC were 3-1 winners against Wolverhampton Wanderers FC. On Sunday, UEFA Europa League finalists Fulham FC host London rivals West Ham United FC, while Chelsea FC will win the Premier League if they overcome Liverpool FC at Anfield and Manchester United FC lose to Sunderland AFC.
