Host association to be appointed on 28 May in Geneva

028 – Host association to be appointed on 28 May in Geneva

The UEFA Executive Committee will select the host association for UEFA EURO 2016 on Friday 28 May 2010, on the second day of its next meeting. The final bid presentations and the announcement ceremony will take place at the Espace Hippomène, Avenue de Châtelaine 7, 1203 Geneva.

The programme for the day is as follows:

• 09:30 – Final presentation of the bids by the three candidates (the order was defined by a draw). Each bidder will have 30 minutes for their final presentation and Turkey will take the stage first, followed by Italy and then France

• 11:45-13:00 – Deliberation and voting by the UEFA Executive Committee

• 13:00 – Announcement of the host association of UEFA EURO 2016 by the UEFA president

• The announcement of the host association will be followed by a press conference with the president of the host association

Voting procedure
The UEFA president Michel Platini (France), the UEFA first vice-president Senes Erzik (Turkey), and Executive Committee member Giancarlo Abete (Italy) will not be entitled to participate in the deliberation and voting process. Consequently, and according to UEFA Statutes, the second vicepresident, Geoffrey Thompson (England) will be the chair of the meeting and will be allowed to vote together with the other twelve members of the UEFA Executive Committee (see full list attached).

There is a first round of voting where the bids must be ranked in order of first, second and third place. Third place gets 1 point, second place 2 points and first place gets 3 points plus a bonus 2 points. The bid with the lowest score is then eliminated. If after the first ballot only one bidder remains (i.e. two are tied with lowest votes) there will be an intermediate ballot of the two bidders with the lowest number of votes. If in this intermediate ballot all bidders receive the same number of points then the chair of the meeting shall determine which bidder shall be excluded by means of a casting vote.

Then a second round of voting takes place where each member of the Executive Committee eligible will vote for at most one of the two bidders. The bidder with the highest number of votes wins. In the event of a tie, the chair of the meeting shall determine which bidder shall be selected as host association by means of a casting vote.
