West Ham United FC have terminated the contract of manager Gianfranco Zola after the east London club finished 17th in the Premier League, one place and five points above the relegation zone.
The 43-year-old, capped 35 times by Italy, has been dismissed with a statement on the West Ham website saying the club would "now be focusing its efforts on seeking a replacement". The former Chelsea FC forward took over at Upton Park in September 2008 after a spell as assistant coach of Italy's Under-21 team, leading West Ham to ninth position in his first season in charge.
