Armin Veh has been appointed as the new coach of Hamburger SV, agreeing a two-year contract with the UEFA Europa League semi-finalists.
Veh succeeds Ricardo Moniz, who had taken over on a temporary basis following the dismissal of Bruno Labbadia at the end of April. Moniz's side were eliminated from the UEFA Europa League by Fulham FC in his first match in charge and Veh's new employers will not be involved in UEFA competition next season having finished seventh in the Bundesliga.
"I am very happy to take this challenge at such a big club," Veh said. "I think we have a big chance of achieving something. As bad as it is to have missed out on the Europa League, this could become an advantage for us."
The 49-year-old Veh guided VfB Stuttgart to the league title in 2007, leaving the club the following year. He was named VfL Wolfsburg coach last summer, but was sacked on 25 January following a run of nine games without a win in all competitions.
Veh will work under a new sporting director at Hamburg, the 34-year-old Bastian Reinhardt hanging up his boots to succeed Dietmar Beiersdorfer after the latter's departure last year. Reinhardt, who has also agreed a two-year contract, made 132 appearances for Hamburg.
Reinhardt said: "Even as I player I was an absolute team player and will continue to be so in my new role. I benefit from the experience of having been a part of this team for a long time. Towards the end I had some distance because of my long injury and gained a new perspective."
