Italian football is mourning former referee Loris Stafoggia who has died aged 54 following a car accident in Foligno, Umbria.
A physical education teacher who worked as an international referee from 1992 to 1996, Stafoggia took charge of 68 Serie A matches, including derbies in Milan and Rome. Upon retiring in 1997, he became a referee observer for the association of Italian referees, a post he held until 2000.
Stafoggia also took the whistle for a number of matches in UEFA competition, including the 1992/93 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup first round second leg between Apollon Limassol FC and Liverpool FC, and the EURO '96 qualifier between Greece and Russia in April 1995.
