Denmark's Kjær joins Wolfsburg from Palermo

Following on from the signing of Arne Friedrich, new VfL Wolfsburg coach Steve McClaren has recruited Danish international Simon Kjær in a reported €10m deal from US Città di Palermo.

Danish international centre-back Simon Kjær has joined VfL Wolfsburg from US Città di Palermo for a fee in the region of €10m.

The 21-year-old has agreed a four-year contract after impressing for his country at the FIFA World Cup finals. "Simon is not only a very good and aggressive defender, but his quality defies his age," said Wolfsburg's executive chairman Dieter Hoeness. "He already displays leadership qualities."

Kjær joined Palermo in summer 2008 after a breakthrough season at FC Midtjylland and went on to score five times in 62 Serie A games for the Sicilian club. Denmark's talent of the year in 2009, he said: "The transfer gives me a chance to play at a top club. I believe that this is the right move for me. We have a strong team that can challenge at the top of the Bundesliga."

Capped 11 times by Denmark, Kjær is Wolfsburg's second high-profile defensive acquisition this summer with new coach Steve McClaren having also completed a move for Germany centre-back Arne Friedrich.
