AS Saint-Etienne ended Toulouse FC's flying start to the Ligue 1 season on Saturday while Olympique Lyonnais and AJ Auxerre were both held 1-1 ahead of the start of the UEFA Champions League group stage.

Toulouse had won their first four games but fell to a 1-0 home defeat against St-Etienne following a 34th-minute goal from Laurent Batlles. Stade Rennais FC are up to second, a point behind Toulouse but one ahead of St-Etienne, after Abdou Kader Mangane's last-gasp strike gave them a 2-1 win against FC Sochaux-Montbéliard. Montpellier Hérault SC could have joined Rennes on 11 points but lost 2-1 at home to AS Nancy-Lorraine.

Lyon drew with Valenciennes FC and have just five points, but that is still one more than Auxerre, second bottom after Youssef El Arabi equalised deep in added time for SM Caen. The other French group-stage contenders, Olympique de Marseille, play AS Monaco FC on Sunday while Ligue 1 newcomers AC Arles-Avignon, are still without a point after losing 4-0 to Paris Saint-Germain FC.
