The last 100% record in the Liga came to an end as Valencia CF were held to a 1-1 draw by Club Atlético de Madrid at Mestalla.
Valencia had won their first three games but fell behind on 18 minutes when Simão finished off a swift counterattack for the visitors. Atlético looked like they would withstand the growing second-half pressure only for Aritz Aduriz (83) to head in David Albelda's cross and, at the least, preserve the hosts' unbeaten start. Valencia are second in the Liga, behind Real Madrid CF on goal difference and one point ahead of FC Barcelona.
Barça prevailed 1-0 against Real Sporting de Gijón, whose goalkeeper Iván Cuéllar frustrated the hosts with a string of saves until David Villa received Daniel Alves's pass and fired in on 49 minutes. Levante UD earned their first victory of the campaign, winning 1-0 at lowly UD Almería, while Real Zaragoza–Hercules CF finished goalless.
