Ádám Szalai struck with 13 minutes to go to give 1. FSV 05 Mainz a victory at FC Bayern München that keeps up their 100% start to the Bundesliga season.

Sami Allagui put Mainz ahead in the 15th minute with a clever back-heel, Lewis Holtby having squared the ball after Miroslav Karhan's pass. But Bayern were level on the stroke of half-time through Bo Svensson's own goal, his defensive header misread by goalkeeper Christian Wetklo. However, André Schürrle's cross was brilliantly volleyed in on the turn by Szalai and although he was then forced off through injury, Mainz clung on to make it six wins out of six.

They remain three points clear of Borussia Dortmund, 3-1 victors at FC St. Pauli, who are a place behind Bayern in ninth. Bayern 04 Leverkusen won 4-1 at VfB Stuttgart to move on to 11 points, trailing TSG 1899 Hoffenheim on goal difference. Stuttgart are bottom after Raúl González scored an 87th-minute equaliser to earn FC Schalke 04 a 2-2 home draw with VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach. SV Werder Bremen defeated Hamburger SV 3-2 ahead of their UEFA Champions League trip to FC Internazionale Milano.
