Villarreal CF continue to go stride for stride with Liga leaders Real Madrid CF after winning 2-0 against Club Atlético de Madrid on Sunday.
Cani put Juan Carlos Garrido's men in front on nine minutes and Giuseppe Rossi added a superb second seven minutes after half-time to ensure they climbed to second, just a point below Madrid, who won 6-1 on Saturday. FC Barcelona are level with Villarreal on 19 points, having also won earlier in the weekend.
RCD Espanyol are up to fifth following a 2-1 victory against Levante UD, with Sevilla FC one place lower following their 4-3 win against Athletic Club. Two goals from Luís Fabiano and one from Frédéric Kanouté – the latter a penalty – had put Sevilla 3-0 in front before they were hit by a red card for Fernando Navarro. Fernando Llorente then struck twice to drag Athletic back into contention, but Kanouté added a second spot kick with ten minutes left and the visitors could only muster one more goal in response.
Meanwhile, UD Almería and Hercules CF drew 1-1, Getafe CF beat Real Sporting de Gijón 3-0 to go seventh and CA Osasuna triumphed by the same scoreline against struggling Málaga CF.
