Brest take chance to go top

The postponement of Stade Rennais FC's visit to Olympique de Marseille allowed Stade Brestois 29 to go top of Ligue 1 with a 2-0 victory against fellow high-fliers AS Saint-Etienne.

Stade Brestois 29 are the new Ligue 1 leaders after Saturday's game between the top two was postponed.

The focus in France had been on leaders Stade Rennais FC's visit to second-placed Olympique de Marseille, a point behind, but torrential rain meant that game was called off. A decision will be taken on Sunday as to whether it can be played then.

Brest and opponents AS Saint-Etienne were both level on points with OM at kick-off. But it is Brest, in their first top-flight campaign for 19 years, who now lead the way after Mario Licka and Romain Poyet scored in the last 13 minutes for a 2-0 win.

Toulouse FC could have moved up to second with victory against struggling RC Lens but although Paulo Machado's early penalty put the home side ahead, Alaeddine Yahia secured a 1-1 draw on 28 minutes.

Olympique Lyonnais defeated FC Sochaux-Montbéliard 2-1 and are six points behind Brest while AJ Auxerre and FC Lorient secured respective 2-0 wins against OGC Nice and bottom team AC Arles-Avignon. AS Nancy-Lorraine moved clear of the bottom three with a 3-2 victory at SM Caen.
