Sunderland AFC endured a derby day to forget in the north east as they were routed 5-1 by a Kevin Nolan-inspired Newcastle United FC, while the Midlands equivalent ended in stalemate.
Newcastle had failed to win at home since a 6-0 success against Aston Villa FC in their first match at St James' Park back in the top flight but they made up for lost time against their local rivals. Nolan fired in after 26 and 34 minutes to lay the foundations and the Black Cats were as good as beaten when Shola Ameobi converted a penalty on the stroke of half-time.
Titus Bramble saw red on 53 minutes to add to Sunderland's problems, with Ameobi adding his second and Nolan completing his hat-trick to round off a resounding victory. Chris Hughton's men climbed to seventh as a result, above their opponents who slipped to 11th.
Liverpool FC lie a spot below Steve Bruce's charges after Maxi Rodríguez's 86th-minute strike secured a 1-0 triumph at Bolton Wanderers FC that lifted them out of the danger zone. As for Aston Villa and Birmingham City FC, they sit directly below Roy Hodgson's side following a goalless draw in their derby encounter.
